Stirling Area Access Panel was delighted to attend the opening of the new footbridge and lift at Stirling railway station. It means the station now has step-free access to all platforms.

The Panel, as well as politicians and community groups, has campaigned for many years for inclusive access to all platforms.

In theory, the 1995 DDA Act and Equality Act 2010 should have resolved the issue, but it was the electrification of the line that made it happen.

The rail electrification works began in July 2018 and included engineers raising the height of the footbridge. This provided an opportunity to alter the roof canopies and to install a lift to platform nine at the same time.

Robert Dick, chair of SAAP, commented: "ScotRail should be praised for the massive engineering effort of raising and realigning bridges, adding lifts etc., to allow disabled and wheelchair users this long overdue access to all areas in the Station.

"As well as reducing barriers to travel, this improvement will allow commuters, and all visitors to enjoy travelling to Stirling City."
